Emergency: 112 6 Guides

In an emergency, call 112

Dutch emergency services follow a health-first, non-punitive approach. You will NOT get in trouble for seeking help. Be honest about what was taken — it helps medical staff provide appropriate care. If at a festival, find the medical tent or EHBO post (first aid).

Our Approach to Harm Reduction

Smartshop.nl believes that accurate information reduces harm. People make safer choices when they understand what they are taking, how to prepare, and what risks exist. This approach is backed by decades of Dutch public health policy and institutions like the Trimbos Institute, which operates the world's leading drug checking program.

The core principles of harm reduction are:

  • Start low, go slow: Always begin with a lower dose than you think you need. You can always take more, but you cannot take less.
  • Know your substance: Understand what you are taking, its effects, duration, and potential interactions with medications or other substances.
  • Set and setting matter: Your mental state (set) and physical environment (setting) dramatically influence your experience.
  • Never use alone: Have a sober, trusted friend present — especially for psychedelics.
  • Plan ahead: Ensure you have no obligations for the duration of the experience. Have water, food, and a safe space ready.
  • Respect your limits: If you are feeling unwell physically or mentally, it is not the right time. Avoid substances if you have heart conditions, psychiatric conditions, are pregnant, or are taking SSRIs/MAOIs.
  • Test your substances: Use the free drug checking services operated by the Trimbos Institute (DIMS) available in most Dutch cities.

Frequently Asked Questions About Safety

Are smartshop products safe?
Legal smartshop products like psilocybin truffles, kratom, salvia, and kanna have established safety profiles when used responsibly. The primary risks come from taking too much, combining with other substances (especially alcohol, SSRIs, or MAOIs), using in an unsafe environment, or ignoring pre-existing medical conditions. Smartshop staff are trained to advise on dosage and safety. Following harm reduction principles — start low, have a sitter, prepare your set and setting — significantly reduces risks.
Can you die from psilocybin truffles?
There are no confirmed deaths from psilocybin truffles or mushrooms alone. Psilocybin has an extremely high safety margin — the lethal dose is estimated at roughly 1,000 times a normal dose, which is physically impossible to consume. The real risks are psychological (anxiety, panic, dangerous behavior during the experience) and environmental (falling, wandering into traffic). This is why set, setting, and having a trip sitter are so important.
What should I do if someone is having a bad trip?
Stay calm, move them to a quiet and safe environment, speak in a gentle reassuring voice, remind them that they have taken a substance and the effects are temporary, guide deep breathing, and offer water. Do NOT give them more substances, leave them alone, or restrain them unless they are a danger to themselves. Call 112 if there is a medical emergency — Dutch emergency services prioritize health and will not prosecute.
Can I go to the hospital in the Netherlands for a drug reaction?
Yes. Dutch emergency services follow a health-first, non-punitive approach. If you call 112 or visit an emergency room, medical staff will treat you without judgment. Be honest about what you took, how much, and when — this information is critical for proper treatment. You will NOT be arrested or prosecuted for seeking medical help. The Trimbos Institute also operates drug checking services where you can test substances anonymously.
Is it safe to mix smartshop products with alcohol?
Mixing psychoactive substances with alcohol is generally not recommended. Alcohol can intensify and unpredictably alter the effects of psychedelics, increase nausea (especially with truffles), impair judgment during the experience, and increase the risk of anxiety or a bad trip. If you choose to drink, keep it minimal and wait until the psychedelic effects have peaked and are subsiding.
How do I know the right dosage for smartshop products?
Always start with a low dose, especially if it is your first time with a substance. Smartshop staff can advise on appropriate starting doses. For psilocybin truffles, begin with 5-7 grams of fresh truffles (mild to moderate experience). Wait at least 60-90 minutes before considering more — effects can take time to fully manifest. Body weight, food intake, individual sensitivity, and the specific product all affect dosage. Our dosage calculator tool can help estimate appropriate doses for truffles.
What substances should never be combined?
The most dangerous combinations involve serotonergic substances. Never combine psychedelics or kanna with SSRI/SNRI antidepressants or MAOIs — this can cause serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal. Do not combine stimulants with heart medications. Do not combine sedatives (kava, alcohol, benzodiazepines) — respiratory depression risk. Kratom should not be combined with opioids. Always use our interaction checker tool and consult a healthcare professional if you take any regular medications.
Are smartshops in the Netherlands regulated?
Yes, smartshops are licensed businesses regulated by local municipalities. They are legally required to verify that customers are 18 or older. Staff are generally knowledgeable about their products and can advise on dosage, effects, and safety. The products sold in smartshops are legal under Dutch law. However, quality and service standards vary between shops — our directory includes ratings and reviews to help you find reputable establishments.
