First Time Guide
Everything you need to know before visiting a Dutch smartshop for the first time — from understanding the products to dosage advice, common mistakes, and how to have a safe, positive experience.
What to Expect at a Dutch Smartshop
A Dutch smartshop is a legal specialty store that sells natural psychoactive products, herbal supplements, nootropics, and related accessories. Unlike a pharmacy or head shop, the staff are trained harm reduction advisors who can explain every product in detail.
The atmosphere is typically calm and professional. You are free to browse, ask questions, and take your time. There is no pressure to buy, and staff will always ask about your experience level before recommending stronger products.
The most popular product is psilocybin truffles (also called philosopher's stones or magic truffles), which are legal in the Netherlands and produce similar effects to magic mushrooms. Other common products include kratom, salvia, kava, herbal XTC supplements, and CBD items.
How to Choose Products
Always tell the staff that it's your first time. They will guide you toward beginner-appropriate options. For psilocybin truffles, there are many different varieties with different intensities:
- Mild:Atlantis, Tampanensis — gentle visual effects, ideal for first experiences
- Medium:Mexicana, Galindoii — stronger effects, suitable after a positive first experience
- Strong:Hollandia, Utopia — very intense, only for experienced users
Start with a mild variety at a low dose. You can always take more in a future session — you cannot take less once it's consumed.
Dosage Advice for Beginners
Dosage is the most important variable for first-timers. Too much is the most common cause of difficult experiences — and it is entirely avoidable.
Weights refer to fresh truffle weight. Doses vary by variety — always confirm with your smartshop. Effects begin 30–60 minutes after ingestion and last 4–6 hours total.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Taking the full pack. Most commercial truffle packs are 15g — a strong dose for an experienced user. A first-timer should take roughly a third.
- Re-dosing too early. If effects haven't started after 90 minutes, wait longer — don't take more. Onset is delayed on a full stomach.
- Using in public. Parks, clubs, and city streets are not suitable settings. Use in a private, familiar environment.
- Mixing with alcohol or cannabis. Combining substances increases unpredictability. For your first time, keep it simple.
- Going alone. Always have a sober, trusted person nearby for your first experience.
- Having a busy schedule. Block out the entire day plus the following morning. Fatigue after the experience is normal.
