Set & Setting
The two most important factors in a safe, meaningful psychedelic experience are your mindset (set) and your environment (setting). Prepare both carefully before using psilocybin truffles or other psychedelics.
What Is "Set"? (Mindset)
"Set" is short for mindset — your psychological state going into the experience. This includes your current mood, emotional history, expectations, fears, and intentions. Psilocybin acts as an amplifier of your mental state: positive emotions tend to become more positive, and unresolved anxiety can become overwhelming.
A good set doesn't mean you need to be perfectly happy. Mild nervousness before a first experience is entirely normal. What matters is that you approach the session with openness and curiosity rather than resistance or urgency.
Preparing Your Mindset
- Set an intention. Ask yourself: why am I doing this? Whether it's curiosity, creativity, healing, or recreation, a clear intention gives the experience direction.
- Avoid traumatic media. In the 24–48 hours before, avoid disturbing news, arguments, or stressful social situations.
- Sleep well. A well-rested mind is more resilient and better able to navigate unusual mental states.
- Eat lightly. A light meal 3–4 hours before helps prevent nausea while keeping energy stable.
- Postpone if distressed. Acute grief, crisis, or severe anxiety are signals to reschedule. Psilocybin is not an escape — it amplifies what's already there.
What Is "Setting"? (Environment)
"Setting" is the physical and social environment where the experience takes place — the location, who is present, ambient sounds, lighting, temperature, and overall atmosphere. A comfortable, familiar, and safe setting dramatically reduces the likelihood of anxiety or panic.
In the Netherlands, the most popular settings are private homes, gardens, and natural areas. Busy city streets, clubs, or unfamiliar public spaces are not suitable — sensory overload combined with psychedelic effects is a major driver of difficult experiences.
Preparing Your Environment
- Clean and tidy your space. Clutter can feel overwhelming. Simple, comfortable spaces support positive experiences.
- Prepare music in advance. Create a playlist of instrumental, ambient, or nature sounds. Avoid music with aggressive lyrics or sudden tempo changes.
- Stock comfort items. Fresh water, fruit juice, light snacks, blankets, eye shades, and drawing materials are all useful.
- Manage lighting. Soft, warm lighting or natural daylight is ideal. Avoid harsh fluorescent lights or complete darkness if unfamiliar.
- Silence notifications. Put phones on silent and remove social media distractions. Unexpected calls or messages can be jarring.
Netherlands-Specific Location Advice
The Netherlands offers some excellent natural settings for psychedelic experiences:
- • Private garden or home — the most controlled option
- • Hoge Veluwe National Park (Gelderland) — vast forests, heathlands, sand dunes
- • Amsterdam Bos — accessible from Amsterdam, quiet wooded areas
- • North Sea dunes (Kennemerduinen, Meijendel) — open skies, ocean air
- • Veluwe forests — quiet, extensive, easy to get lost in nature
Always go with a trusted companion who knows your location. Inform someone not present of your plans and check-in time.
