Cannabis is tolerated in the Netherlands, but not legal. The sale of soft drugs in coffeeshops is not prosecuted by the justice system under certain conditions. This policy exists because the Netherlands wants to distinguish between the hard and soft drug markets, does not want to criminalize users and wants to prevent cannabis users from coming into contact with criminal circles where hard drugs are also sold.
De Pijp is home to almost 150 nationalities and offers an enormous variety of authentic and exotic ethnic cuisines such as Syrian, Moroccan, Surinamese, Turkish, Japanese and Spanish food. The area also houses the Heineken Experience and the country's largest outdoor market, the Albert Cuyp Market. In the evenings, De Pijp transforms into an energetic hub with live jazz, cocktail bars and a vibrant nightlife.
